The Dawn of a New Era: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Historic Eliminator Knock

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has long been a breeding ground for exceptional young talent, but the rise of Rajasthan Royals’ 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the 2026 season has transcended typical breakthrough campaigns. In a high-stakes encounter during the IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the teenage sensation played an innings that will be remembered for decades. Scoring a breathtaking 97 runs off just 29 deliveries, Sooryavanshi single-handedly dismantled one of the tournament’s most formidable bowling lineups, leaving spectators, teammates, and opponents in absolute awe.

Dismantling the SRH Bowling Attack: Powerplay Destruction

The foundation of Sooryavanshi’s masterclass against SRH was built on a fearless and brutal powerplay assault. Walking out to open the innings, the 15-year-old showed no signs of big-match pressure. Instead, he took the attack directly to the opposition’s premier bowlers. In the third over of the match, he faced Australian captain Pat Cummins and dispatched him for three consecutive, towering sixes. By the end of the six-over powerplay, Sooryavanshi had raced to 60 runs off a mere 20 balls.

His onslaught did not stop there. He continued to clear the boundary with ease, hitting a total of 12 sixes during his brief stay at the crease—eight of which came in the powerplay and four in the middle overs. Although he narrowly missed out on breaking Chris Gayle’s legendary record for the fastest century in IPL history (30 balls), his 29-ball 97 established a new benchmark for destructive hitting in a playoff match.

Shattering Records: The Phenomenal Numbers Behind the Genius

Sooryavanshi’s exploits in the Eliminator were not an isolated incident but rather the pinnacle of a remarkably consistent and high-impact season. With this innings, the youngster reclaimed the coveted Orange Cap, taking his season tally to an astonishing 680 runs in just 15 matches. What makes this run tally even more historic is the manner in which those runs have been scored. Sooryavanshi currently boasts an incredible strike rate of 243. In doing so, he became the first player in T20 cricket history to score 600 or more runs in a single tournament while maintaining a strike rate above 200. Furthermore, his 12 sixes in the Eliminator took his seasonal tally to 65 sixes, eclipsing Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes hit in a single IPL season.

Why Tom Moody Crowned Him the ‘Don Bradman of T20’

Following this spectacular performance, former Australian all-rounder and current Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) Director of Cricket Tom Moody paid the ultimate tribute to the teenager. Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Moody compared Sooryavanshi’s absolute dominance to that of the greatest batsman to have ever played the game: Sir Donald Bradman. Moody expressed that the level of dominance displayed by the teenager was unlike anything ever witnessed before in the shortest format of the game, even by fully matured, world-class international batsmen.

“I’m sort of trying to get my head around how to explain it,” Moody remarked. “The only way to explain it is to ask someone to watch it and come up with their own description, because we’re witnessing something I don’t think we’ve seen in our lifetime in this format of the game, or even any format of the game. We’ve seen amazing things, but not to this extreme.”

Moody went on to draw a direct parallel with Bradman’s unparalleled dominance over the cricketing world during the 1920s and 1930s. “The only thing I can take it back to is what Bradman was doing,” Moody added. “Bradman nearly averaged 100 in Test cricket, and the drop-off to the next best was around 60, so that’s the separation we’re talking about. It’s that in T20 cricket at the age of 15.”

Match Context: Rajasthan Royals Charge into Qualifier 2

While Sooryavanshi’s innings was the undisputed highlight, it set the perfect foundation for a massive Rajasthan Royals total. Following his dismissal, Dhruv Jurel kept the momentum going with a blistering 20-ball half-century. Minor cameos from the rest of the Rajasthan batting lineup pushed the team’s total to a mammoth 243 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad faced a mountain to climb, and their hopes of chasing down the target evaporated quickly in the powerplay. England fast bowler Jofra Archer delivered a lethal opening spell, dismissing SRH’s top three batsmen within the first six overs. Stripped of their explosive top order, SRH’s chase faltered, and Rajasthan Royals comfortably secured a 47-run victory to march authoritatively into Qualifier 2. With at least one more match left in Rajasthan’s campaign, cricket fans around the world will be eagerly watching to see if the teenage phenom can continue his historic run and lead his franchise to IPL glory.
