Grace Scrivens fifty sets up Essex in Headingley thriller – Grace Scrivens Shines as Essex Edge Yorkshire in Headingley Thriller
A Thrilling Finish at Headingley
In a contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the very final delivery, Essex managed to scrape past Yorkshire by a mere three runs in their latest Vitality Blast outing. The result marks a second victory for the visitors, while Yorkshire remains winless after four matches, left to ponder another opportunity that slipped through their grasp.
Essex Sets the Pace
The match began with Essex showing clear intent, racing to 48 for no loss. The charge was led primarily by Grace Scrivens, whose aggressive approach and powerful hitting down the ground resulted in five boundaries. Yorkshire struggled to contain the opening stand until the introduction of leg-spinner Holly Garton in the eighth over. Garton provided the breakthrough, bowling Alice MacLeod for 22, and momentum shifted instantly when Jess Jonassen trapped Cordelia Griffith lbw with her very first delivery, reducing Essex to 61 for 2.
Scrivens, however, remained unfazed and brought up a well-deserved half-century off 38 balls in the 12th over. With the help of some lapses in the field, Essex reached 83 for 2, looking primed for a late-innings surge. The tide turned again thanks to a moment of brilliance from Yorkshire skipper Lauren Winfield-Hill, who claimed a sharp, low edge to dismiss Scrivens for 53, handing Ria Fackrell her first wicket of the day.
Stuttering Middle Order
At 88 for 3, Essex still possessed a solid foundation, but the innings lost steam as wickets began to tumble. Joanne Gardner fell for just one, caught at deep midwicket off the bowling of Maddie Ward. Yorkshire’s fielders were energized, with Ami Campbell producing a superb direct hit to run out Florence Miller for two as she attempted a risky second run. Despite a brief flurry of momentum from Sophia Smale, who struck two boundaries off Garton, the dismissal of Jodi Grewcock for 26 forced a further slowdown. Jonassen eventually closed out the innings by removing Smale for 21, leaving Essex with a total of 146 for 7.
Yorkshire’s Chase Falters
Facing a target of 147, Yorkshire’s chase started with promise. Winfield-Hill and Erin Thomas provided a quick-fire 25-run partnership before Smale had Thomas caught by MacLeod for 17. The pressure intensified when Winfield-Hill, on 18, was undone by a delivery from Scrivens that kept low, crashing into the stumps.
With 68 runs required from the final ten overs, the onus fell on Jess Jonassen and Sterre Kalis. The pair pushed the score to 66 before Scrivens struck again, bowling Jonassen for 10. The match remained in the balance until Kalis fell for 23, caught at cover by Scrivens off Smale. As the required run rate climbed, Maddie Ward perished for 19 while attempting to accelerate.
The Final Drama
The game reached a fever pitch in the closing stages. A boundary and a massive six from Ami Campbell off Scrivens’ final over shifted the pressure back onto the visitors. Suddenly, Yorkshire needed 26 runs from three overs. Campbell’s departure for 21 at the start of Eva Gray’s penultimate over triggered a collapse. Beth Langston followed two balls later, and with Gray maintaining her composure to claim 3 for 25, the game came down to the wire.
Nine runs were needed from the final over. A run-out on the second ball and a boundary from Ria Fackrell kept hope alive, but she was stumped on the very next delivery. Essex ultimately claimed a hard-fought three-run victory, leaving Yorkshire to rue yet another close defeat in a season of missed chances.
