Lanning Masterclass Seals Lancashire Victory

In a commanding display at Emirates Old Trafford, Meg Lanning guided Lancashire Thunder to their first win of the Women’s Vitality Blast campaign. The Australian superstar produced a clinical 75 not out off just 48 balls to dismantle Somerset in a one-sided encounter, securing a seven-wicket victory for the home side.

For Somerset, this marked their first defeat of the tournament, but they were largely outplayed by a disciplined Lancashire unit. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the visitors struggled to establish a significant total, eventually finishing on 137 for 6. While captain Sophie Luff anchored the innings with a gritty 42, the Lancashire bowling attack consistently applied pressure to prevent any momentum from building.

The Lancashire Bowling Effort

The Lancashire attack was spearheaded by the impressive Hannah Jones, who returned standout figures of 3 for 20. Jones broke the back of the Somerset batting line-up, taking two crucial wickets in the space of five balls early in the innings. She dismissed opener Bex Odgers lbw and bowled Anika Learoyd shortly after, effectively stifling Somerset’s bright start.

A historic moment occurred in the eighth over when 16-year-old legspinner Venus Weerappuli made her senior debut. In a dream start to her career, Weerappuli claimed the wicket of Niamh Holland, who was caught by Fi Morris at deep midwicket. This breakthrough provided a significant morale boost for the Thunder, who never allowed Somerset to find their rhythm for the remainder of the innings.

Despite some late resistance from Jess Hazell, who hit a quick-fire 23, Somerset’s total of 137 proved insufficient on a pitch where the ball came onto the bat nicely for the chasing side.

A Clinical Run Chase

Lancashire’s response was emphatic. From the very first over, Meg Lanning and Eve Jones signaled their intent, putting together a powerplay that yielded 62 runs. The pair struck nine boundaries between them, leaving the Somerset bowlers searching for answers. Lanning, demonstrating her world-class pedigree, raced to her fifty off just 30 balls, maintaining total control throughout the innings.

Although Erin Vukusic managed to claim three wickets for Somerset, including the scalp of Eve Jones for 43 and Grace Johnson for 16, there was no stopping the momentum. Lanning remained an unflustered presence at the crease. Even after a momentary wobble saw a couple of wickets fall in quick succession, Lanning regained control, eventually hitting a massive six off Holland before Ellie Threlkeld struck the winning single.

Looking Ahead

This result provides a vital injection of confidence for Lancashire Thunder. By reaching their target in just 15.3 overs, they also secured a valuable bonus point, which could prove decisive as the group stages progress. For Lanning, this was her second successive unbeaten fifty, underscoring her importance to the side’s ambitions this season.

For Somerset, the focus will now shift to regrouping ahead of their next fixture. Despite the loss, they remain a competitive side, though this encounter served as a reminder of the quality required to overcome a firing Meg Lanning. The victory sets up an intriguing narrative for the remainder of the Blast, with Lancashire now firmly back in the hunt for qualification.
