The Pressure of the Eliminator

The stage is set for the most critical encounter of the season. On Wednesday, May 27, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) will lock horns with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2026 Eliminator in New Chandigarh. With a spot in Qualifier 2 against the Gujarat Titans on the line, the stakes could not be higher. For the loser, the journey concludes here, while the victor moves one step closer to the ultimate glory.

Amidst the high-octane tension, all eyes are fixed on 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Having taken the tournament by storm with his blistering strike rate and fearless stroke play, the youngster faces his biggest test yet. With 583 runs already under his belt at an astonishing strike rate exceeding 230, Sooryavanshi has redefined aggressive batting in this edition of the IPL.

Anil Kumble’s Vote of Confidence

Legendary Indian spinner and former head coach Anil Kumble has weighed in on the youngster’s temperament. Speaking on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’, Kumble expressed his admiration for the teenager’s mental fortitude, suggesting that the pressure of a knockout game is unlikely to faze him.

“He managed only four runs against MI in the last game, so this is a fresh opportunity,” Kumble noted. “I don’t think he sees this as a high-pressure knockout game. He should just go out and play his natural game. He is remarkably mature for a 15-year-old.”

Proven Ability Under Duress

Kumble was quick to highlight that Sooryavanshi is no stranger to performing under pressure. He pointed to the must-win clash against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where the teenager played a pivotal role in keeping the Royals’ playoff aspirations alive. According to Kumble, such displays prove that the youngster understands the nuances of the game far beyond his years.

“We saw that in his 90-plus knock against LSG, where he helped Rajasthan win a must-win match. Rajasthan had to win their last two games to qualify, so those innings were under serious pressure as well. Yet, he played with the same freedom,” Kumble added.

Tactical Awareness: More Than Just Aggression

While many associate the teenager solely with brute force, Kumble emphasized that there is a strategic mind behind the aggression. The teenager has experienced the full spectrum of emotions against SRH this season—a duck in their first meeting, followed by a masterful 36-ball century in Jaipur.

Kumble believes this roller-coaster journey has equipped the youngster with the necessary awareness to handle the Eliminator. “I don’t think he will change his approach just because it’s an eliminator,” the former spinner explained. “If the ball is in his slot, he will go for it. But if the situation demands, he also knows when to take his time and build an innings. That awareness is rare at his age. Whether it’s a league game or a knockout, his mindset remains the same. That is what makes him so special.”

Heading into the Showdown

As the Rajasthan Royals look to secure their path to the final, where RCB already await, the team will be relying heavily on Sooryavanshi to provide a blistering start. The Eliminator promises to be a clash of nerves, but if Kumble’s assessment is correct, the teenager is not just ready for the contest—he is eager for it.

Whether he manages to dismantle the SRH bowling attack once again or faces a stern challenge, the cricketing world will be watching closely. One thing is certain: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already proven that he belongs on the biggest stage, and the upcoming Eliminator is the perfect arena to cement his status as one of the brightest prospects in modern cricket.
