A Legend Looks Back: Ashwin’s RCB Connection

Ravichandran Ashwin, who concluded his storied IPL career in mid-2025, stands as one of the most successful bowlers in the history of the league. A two-time IPL champion and a two-time Champions League T20 (CLT20) winner with the Chennai Super Kings, Ashwin’s career took him to various corners of the tournament, including stints as captain for the Punjab Kings and impactful spells with the Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals.

However, even with a trophy-laden career, the 39-year-old recently opened up about a missing chapter in his journey. In a conversation with Vimal Kumar on the ‘Ash Ki Baat’ YouTube channel, the legendary all-rounder shared his genuine admiration for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), admitting that playing for the Bengaluru-based franchise was a dream he never managed to realize.

The Unfulfilled Aspiration

While discussing his career path, Ashwin reflected on the franchises he felt a connection with. He noted his deep happiness and fond memories with the Chennai Super Kings, his home franchise, but highlighted that both the Rajasthan Royals and RCB were teams he had always hoped to represent. While he successfully checked the Rajasthan Royals off that list, spending three seasons with the side, the opportunity to wear the RCB jersey never materialized.

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, home to RCB, holds a special place in Ashwin’s heart. He spoke fondly of the reception he received at the venue, even during high-pressure Test matches for India. He noted, “I have good memories of playing at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium even in Test matches, the crowd there has supported me. And it’s also near my home town.” This geographical and emotional proximity seems to have fueled his desire to play in front of the passionate Bengaluru faithful as a home player.

Praising the RCB Renaissance

The timing of Ashwin’s comments aligns with RCB’s recent transformation into a powerhouse of the tournament. After years of being perceived as underachievers, RCB broke their trophy drought in 2025 by defeating the Punjab Kings in the final. Under the astute leadership of Rajat Patidar, the franchise has maintained its momentum, reaching the final again in IPL 2026 after a dominant performance at the top of the league stage table.

Ashwin expressed genuine joy at seeing the team’s fortunes turn around. Commenting on their recent success, he stated, “I am very happy for RCB. They deserve it. Luck is just not luck, luck is earned.” His assessment highlights the hard work and structural changes that have turned the franchise into a consistent, formidable force in the league.

Dominance on the Field: The Path to the Final

RCB’s current form is nothing short of clinical. In the Qualifier 1 match of the 2026 season, held in Dharamsala, the team demonstrated why they are the favorites to defend their title. Facing off against the Gujarat Titans, RCB put on a masterclass in aggressive cricket, securing a massive 92-run victory.

The catalyst for this win was undoubtedly Rajat Patidar. The captain led by example, dismantling the Titans’ bowling attack with a breathtaking 93* from just 33 balls. His explosive innings featured five boundaries and nine towering sixes, setting an insurmountable target of 255 for the opposition. The bowling unit was equally lethal, with Jacob Duffy and Bhuvneshwar Kumar combining to take five wickets, effectively stifling the Titans’ chase and bundling them out for 162.

As RCB prepares for another final, it is clear that the franchise has reached a new peak. For a veteran like Ashwin, watching the team from the sidelines, there is perhaps a tinge of nostalgia for what could have been. Yet, his appreciation for the team’s grit and current excellence shows the deep respect the legendary spinner holds for the game, regardless of which side he stood on.
