The Changing Dynamics of Rajasthan Royals’ Top Order
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a breeding ground for young talent, where established stars can find themselves suddenly sharing the stage with overnight sensations. In the IPL 2026 season, this exact phenomenon is playing out within the Rajasthan Royals camp. A couple of years ago, Yashasvi Jaiswal was widely regarded as one of the most exciting young top-order batters in world cricket. However, the emergence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi—the prodigy from Bihar who made his debut at just 14 years old in the 2025 season—has completely shifted the spotlight.
As Sooryavanshi continues his aggressive onslaught against elite bowling lineups, Jaiswal, now 21, seems to have slipped into the background. This sudden shift in team dynamics has caught the attention of veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who offered a fascinating perspective on his YouTube channel. In doing so, the historic Indian opening partnership of Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra was recalled, and Aakash Chopra dragged into debate as comparisons with Yashasvi Jaiswal emerge am.
The Statistical Divide in IPL 2026
The numbers from the ongoing IPL 2026 season tell a clear story of two contrasting campaigns. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been in imperious form, tearing bowling attacks apart with fearless cricket. In his 14 innings this season, the youngster has amassed a staggering 583 runs. What makes his run tally even more remarkable is his average of 41.64 combined with an astonishing strike rate of 232.27. Such numbers are rare in T20 cricket, let alone from a player who only recently entered the professional circuit.
On the other hand, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s campaign has been relatively subdued. The left-hander has managed 397 runs in the season so far, averaging 33.08 with a strike rate of 159.43. While these stats are respectable by normal standards, they pale in comparison to the sheer destruction his junior partner is causing at the other end. This stark contrast in impact is what lies at the heart of the current discussions surrounding the Rajasthan Royals’ opening pair.
Ravichandran Ashwin on Jaiswal’s Form
Ravichandran Ashwin did not hold back in expressing his surprise over Jaiswal’s current form. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran spinner admitted that Jaiswal’s output has been underwhelming given his immense potential.
“It is slightly underwhelming, and I am a bit surprised by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s performance in the Rajasthan Royals team. I am a little surprised because I expected a lot from him; I have high hopes,” Ashwin shared. He further suggested that the rapid rise of Sooryavanshi has had a psychological impact on the 21-year-old opener.
“But I just have a slight inkling of a feeling that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s display has perhaps shaken Jaiswal a bit. It has rattled him,” Ashwin added. According to the off-spinner, Jaiswal appears to be pressing too hard in games, often losing his wicket in an attempt to match the explosive scoring rate of his teenage partner.
The Sehwag-Chopra Parallel
To illustrate his point, Ashwin went back in time to reference one of India’s most contrasting Test-match opening partnerships: Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra. Sehwag was famed for his boundary-hitting, ultra-aggressive style, while Chopra played the traditional, defensive role, holding one end secure and grinding down the opposition’s bowling.
Ashwin pointed out that while Chopra was highly effective in doing his job—especially during tough assignments like the tour of Australia—Sehwag’s blistering style often made Chopra’s contributions seem invisible to the casual observer.
“If you remember the opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra in Test matches, Aakash Chopra used to play really well, giving good starts of 30 or 40 runs. But the sheer style and manner in which Virender Sehwag batted used to make Aakash Chopra look almost invisible. Not that he was; Aakash Chopra did a great job on that Australian tour, too,” Ashwin explained.
Applying this historical context to the modern-day Royals, Ashwin noted: “But I just have a feeling that because of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s fierce batting here, it has thrown Jaiswal off a little. In many games, Jaiswal got out trying to hit the ball too hard.” The comparison highlights how an ultra-aggressive partner can inadvertently disrupt the rhythm of another batsman, forcing them out of their natural game plan.
Mumbai Indians Underwhelm Against the Royals
Beyond the opening partnership of the Royals, Ashwin also turned his attention to their recent opponents, the Mumbai Indians. Following a Sunday clash where the Rajasthan Royals outclassed MI, Ashwin expressed deep disappointment in the five-time champions’ performance. The Royals set a target of 206, which Ashwin believed the Mumbai Indians should have chased down comfortably on that surface.
However, Mumbai Indians’ chase fell flat, compounding what has been an incredibly difficult campaign for them. At the same time, the Royals saw key players step up when it mattered most, including England fast bowler Jofra Archer, who delivered exactly when his team needed him.
“I want to see Yashasvi Jaiswal bat well because he has the ability. But this time, Rajasthan Royals’ story has been about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and on the day Jofra Archer was needed, he also stepped up. But all that said, the Mumbai Indians have been very, very, very, very underwhelming this season. This score was chaseable,” Ashwin concluded.
